Krystal & Tony’s D.C. Elopement at The National Portrait Gallery

There’s something truly magical about intimate elopements, and Krystal and Tony’s self-officiated wedding at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, was no exception. Driving all the way from North Carolina just to have me capture their special day, they brought a sense of adventure, excitement, and genuine joy that made every moment unforgettable. Fun fact, they actually found me on TikTok, proving that love (and amazing elopement photography) really can start with a scroll.

In DC, couples have the unique option to self-officiate their wedding. This means that, without the need for a separate officiant, they can personally lead their ceremony, exchange vows, and legally marry. Krystal and Tony embraced this freedom, reading their heartfelt vows to each other in the serene, light-filled courtyard of the Portrait Gallery.

After their ceremony, we explored the museum together, wandering through exhibits and discovering quiet corners perfect for couple’s photos. From the grandeur of historic portraits to hidden nooks with soft natural light, every area provided a unique backdrop to capture their love authentically.

Krystal and Tony’s elopement is a perfect example of how a wedding doesn’t have to be traditional to be meaningful. With a self-officiated ceremony, they created a deeply personal experience that reflected exactly who they are as a couple, surrounded by art, history, and each other.

If you’re considering eloping in DC, remember: self-officiation is legal, and the city’s museums and cultural landmarks provide stunning, unique settings perfect for both your vows and your photos.
